Alpaca Quick Facts
· Alpacas are very curious and intelligent.
· They originally came to the United States in 1984.
· Alpaca’s are exotic livestock.
· They are originally from the Andes Mountains in Peru, Bolivia,
& Chili, South America.
· They are raised as pack animals in their native countries.
· They are in the camel family & a cousin of the llama.
· There are two types of alpacas: Huacaya and Suri. (Our ranch has both types.)
Huacaya (wah-KÍ-ya) Alpacas have a “teddy bear-like” appearance.
The Suri (sir-e) have fiber curls in spirals, which makes it form pendulous locks instead of fluff.
· Total height is roughly 4’-6’ (36” where their neck meets the backbone).
· They are shaved once a year.
· Fleece (fur) is hypo-allergenic.
· There are twenty-two recognized colors of Alpaca’s.
· They have four stomachs.
· Only have bottom teeth.
· Their only defenses are to spit or kick.
